Whispers in Color: A Conversation with Mari Kolorowa

Mari Kolorowa doesn’t just draw – she builds tiny, whimsical worlds where owls think in symbols and worms curl into question marks. If you’ve ever held one of her postcards, you’ve held a little spark of her imagination. 👉 You can find Mari’s illustrated postcards here on FavoritePostcard.com.

Mari postcards have quietly become favorites in my shop – full of soft magic, gentle creatures, and scenes that seem to belong somewhere between a memory and a fairytale. There’s something about them that makes you pause for a second, smile, and imagine.

Since our collaboration continues (yes, more postcards are on the way!), I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to introduce you to the person behind these gentle, joyful images. I asked Mari a few questions – nothing too formal, just the kind of things I’d ask over coffee and cake. Here’s what she shared.

  • For those who haven’t met you yet: who is Mari Kolorowa in a few lines?

Mari Kolorowa is an illustrator and artist who never stands still and is always seeking new creative projects. She loves creating an artistic atmosphere, sees it in everything, and finds creativity in the details.

  • If someone could live inside one of your illustrations for a day, what kind of day would it be?

It would be a day full of brightness, where you’d discover many fun little details and never feel bored.

  • What’s one drawing tool or ritual you can’t live without?

Probably my ritual of consistency: first, I write everything down in my notebook, even the smallest details. Then I buy all the needed supplies and mentally prepare to stay home for a few days without going outside.

  • Which of your postcard designs feels most “you” – and why?

Honestly, all my postcards are pieces of me. But if I had to choose, it would be the owls. I’ve been drawing them since 2013. Their design has evolved, but they’ve remained my favorite.

  • What’s the silliest or most unexpected detail you’ve ever hidden in your art?

A question mark shaped like a little worm 🙂 or the other way around — a worm shaped like a question mark!

  • Do you imagine who will receive your postcards when you draw them?

Definitely someone who doesn’t like standard postcards — someone who loves color and a bit of silliness. I truly enjoy reading feedback. There have even been people who bought my cards, then received them from strangers later on. That really moved me 🫶🏻

  • What would you write on a postcard if you could send one to yourself 10 years ago?

Even if the path takes you somewhere unexpected, don’t forget why you started. Never give up — and expect nothing.

  • What do you think makes a postcard worth keeping?

Quality paper, interesting little elements, unique design, and exclusivity.

  • Do you have a dream destination you’d love to receive a postcard from?

Norway 🙂

  • You often illustrate dreamlike places — do you have a real-world place that feels a bit like a fairytale?

Yes! Probably Norway again — Trolltunga (The Troll’s Tongue).

  • Is there a sound or song that always brings you back into your creative space?

These days, I rarely listen to music while working — I prefer live concerts. My favorite band is Depeche Mode.

  • What’s your favorite part about working with FavoritePostcard? (Be honest!)

Honestly, when I first wrote to Salomėja, I never expected such a warm collaboration to blossom. I really enjoy the themes and prompts she gives — her experience is like a little school, there’s a lot to learn from. My favorite part is showing the illustrations that might become postcards. I always look forward to her feedback ❤️

  • Is there a postcard you’d love to draw, but haven’t yet found the right moment?

Yes! I dream of making postcards with gold foil and unusual edge cuts, but they’re expensive to produce. I don’t have a fixed plan for illustrations — sometimes I don’t even have time for sketches. I just grab my tools and draw 💕

  • Is there an illustration that feels like a personal letter — a message to yourself or someone close, even if it’s never meant to be sent?

Yes, there are such illustrations. Sometimes they come to life in silence, during moments of inner change. It’s like I’m speaking to myself — or to someone close — through colors, symbols, and shapes. I don’t always publish those works right away. They’re like a handwritten journal entry — only drawn instead of written.

Thanks so much to Mari for taking the time to answer these questions with such honesty and charm. Her art has a way of speaking quietly but clearly – and now we know why.

You can find Mari’s illustrated postcards in the Mari Kolorowa category on my shop – and stay tuned: new ones are always in the works!
